STARFALL
Front StudioMOOOI
The best ideas come forth when the mind is totally at peace. And the most beautiful way to quiet the mind is to be in nature and gaze at a star-studded night sky. Imagine lying down on a bed of grass and fragrant summer flowers. You’re letting your arms rest beside your body. Letting your legs grow heavy, sinking deeper into the soft grasses. Releasing any tension in your face and neck. Gently breathing in and out while a blanket of tiny lights punctures an indigo sky. As the last warm light in the west slowly fades away, so does the remaining tension in your body and mind. And you surrender yourself to the moment that is, watched over by countless stars. Gazing at the starry night sky, you feel completely at ease. A blank canvas for new ideas, a new start. And then... You witness the most precious thing, a falling star.
Imagine going to sleep and waking every day under the stars. Or dining with the watchful stars over you. A million chances for a new fresh start, every day. No more waiting for a star to fall with Starfall Light by Front!
The idea for Starfall came from wondering what it would be like sitting underneath the stars and creating a chandelier that gives you the feeling of sitting underneath a starry sky. Hanging the lamp’s ‘stars’ from different lengths created a three-dimensional effect, as if you’re really stargazing.
Front worked on an installation for the Science Museum in London. Collaborating with the European Space Agency, they created a gigantic installation of the 800 closest stars from earth. Front were given a map with the distance of each star, and they hung light sources from different heights, to simulate a dimensional installation of those 800 stars. The installation sparked the first idea for the Starfall Light. How beautiful would it be to create a chandelier with that same effect; that feeling of peace you get when looking at the night sky. And bring it into your home.
FRONT has spent a lot outdoors in the Swedish forests at night. With the low population density in the Nordic country, it wasn’t hard for them to find a spot in the forest where it was completely dark, void from any light pollution. “The sky in those places was so much darker than in a city. The stars are so much more striking and prominent. Truly a magical feeling.”
No more waiting for a star to fall with Starfall Light by Front! The Starfall Light is a circular suspension light with a contemporary twist. Punctuated with 30 light sources, this upside-down chandelier brings perpetual star fall in your home. Thanks to 30 slim arms of different lengths, it not only resembles falling stars but also a starry night sky with dots of light at varying heights. A brand-new constellation waiting to be discovered! Installation is a breeze, thanks to the arms already in place, so you can enjoy your falling stars within moments.
About Front
Sofia Lagerkvist and Anna Lindgren are the members of the Swedish design studio Front. Their works are based on common discussions, explorations and experiments and they collaborate in all projects from initial ideas to the final product. Front’s design objects often communicate a story to the observer about the design process, about the material, or about conventions within the design field. Significant in their work is the partial assignment of the design process to animals, computers, or machines. They worked on various projects such as a constantly changing interior, exploding objects, robotic furniture and a range of furniture inspired by their fascination with magic.
